Welding Skills Needs

  • Do you need welding, fabrication, or non-destructive testing (NDT) skills?

    Is your company interested in skills development delivered in the South West of England?

    Local business feedback is telling us that employers in the Heart of the South West are facing skills gaps in welding and technical training, and that support is needed to:

    • Attract and train new employees
    • Develop a skilled workforce 
    • Provide young people with a clear route to technical employment

    The Heart of the South West (HotSW) Local Enterprise Partnership is considering the availability of Welding, Fabrication and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) skills training in the South West.  We are interested in hearing from employers who need these skills and want to hear about solutions that will provide: 

    • Training for new entrants into the industry 
    • Upskilling for individuals with some skills in welding and fabrication
    • Reskilling for individuals in associated occupations
    • Training and skills assessment for those already employed in the sector

    This consultation should take no longer than 7-10 mins to complete and is open until 5pm on Friday 24th January 2020.

    Pipe Welder: Welding using a minimum of two manual arc welding processes from TIG, PAW,MMA, MIG/ MAG and FCAW. (Carbon Steel, Low Alloy Steel, High Alloy Ferritic/Martensitic Steel, Austenitic Stainless Steel, Nickel & Nickel Alloys, Aluminium & Aluminium alloys, Titanium & Titanium Alloys, Copper & Copper Alloys Pipe) welding in all welding positions achieving one of the following standards:   ISO 9606 / ASME IX / AWS

    Plate Welder: Using two welding processes from TIG, PAW, MMA, MIG/MAG,  FCAW Carbon Steel, Low Alloy Steel, High Alloy Ferritic/Martensitic Steel,  Austenitic Stainless Steel, Nickel & Alloys, Aluminium & Aluminium alloys,  Titanium & Titanium Alloys, Copper & Copper Alloys. To achieve one of the following standards e.g. ISO 9606/ASME IX/AWS

    Supervisor/Manager/Inspector: Determine weld requirements, solve production problems, supervise activities, quality control, quality improvements and productivity and NDT (Non-destructive Testing)

    Nuclear welding inspection technician: A Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician (NWIT) performs a quality control and welding inspection role for the nuclear industry. They ensure the safety and integrity of nuclear related fabrications to meet the exacting quality requirements specified in nuclear industry regulations, specifications, standards and detailed engineering documents
